A Question That Irritates Me

27 Nov 2023

I walk up to any old aquaintance and they often confront me with the same question:

“How was your week?” Or “What did you get up to this week?”

“Good.” Comes my lame response. Because I generally don’t remember. At least, not in the moment.

Possible Reason #1

I’m not sure why this question frustrates me so much. Maybe it’s because my life isn’t very interesting and I don’t have much to share.

That’s not entirely true though. In a productive week there are lots of things I do that I find exciting. But if I attempted to explain it to them, they would just look at me funny.

Possible Reason #2

Another possible cause of my frustration is that I’m not a very quick thinker. A typical icebreaker interaction would go something like this:

“Hey what’d’ya get up to this week?”

internally dies “Well…” Then I think for a bit, and “Uhm…” a bit more.

“Not much.” I eventually respond. Then later, probably on my way home, my mind decides to start working and serves up a number of excellent things I could’ve mentioned.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I find this question irritating and dumb and it sucks. This may be because I don’t do much stuff that I can easily explain to other people. At least, not without them falling asleep. And/or it may be because I just can’t think of anything to say in the moment and I feel like a doofus.
